Dental Sealants - On Point
Friday, February 4th, 2022
Speaker: Dr. Bill Maas
Course Description: The recently released report, Oral Health in America - Advances and Challenges, documents an increase in the number of children and adolescents receiving at least one sealant. In spite of this, there has been no change in the prevalence of dental caries and an increase in the disparity between lower-income adolescents and their more affluent peers. 1 in 6 adolescents have untreated decay, and almost 1 in 4 who are living in poverty. All oral health professionals would agree that preventing the onset of dental caries across the lifespan should be the primary goal of dental care. Unfortunately, for those serving communities at high risk of caries, disease is already present in many of their patients. Fortunately, we now have many more options to stop the consequences of the cariogenic process, without damaging sound tooth tissue and placing restorations. These can be applied at both the patient and lesion level. Recently, several initiatives have been started to support dentists committed to following up-to-date, evidence-based, tooth preserving preventive caries management strategies. Dental sealants remain underutilized in their role for arresting early carious lesions. This presentation addresses interventions that can be used to arrest or reverse existing caries lesions without picking up the dental handpiece, including those that do not generate aerosols and those that can be delivered at locations more convenient for patients, thus avoiding the non-productive “no show” appointments that are so costly for dental practices.
Objectives: At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
